American Social Media Personality Penalized Following Large-Scale E-Bike Ride on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of approximately 40 people operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, where cycling is prohibited. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated a senior police official David Driver on the following day.

Law enforcement said they did not chase right away the riders out of safety concerns but instead located the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the city gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, authorities stated they had served the American online personality known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points per notice, in relation to the bridge incident. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 1.2m on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a local publication recently following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I accept the blame. It was among the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. So when I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for stricter rules. A senior government official, Mark Butler, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," the minister said. "We must ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the powers to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW reported over two hundred injuries associated with electric bikes in 2024. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that number jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
