England's Assistant Coach Shares His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting with his first major job, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the peak as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies feature player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. He stresses the England collective and avoids language including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and the head coach as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the versatility, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire for improvement is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to work together again. The FA see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
