Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
