New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized the former governor, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to support the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.

“It is crucial to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams remarked.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
