Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Characters
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
