The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined initialism came to light several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a minor who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
