The White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract for the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for winning the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
- $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.
His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese to represent the White Sox, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
