Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy was activated as of early November, according to a company memo distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, while others hunt for rare cards that can command sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.
Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players alike.
